Doug Foyle, Board of Education

Elected in November 2009:

I am a life-long Democrat and a ten-year resident of Glastonbury. In the spring of 2009, I led Naubuc Elementary School parents in their efforts to preserve a quality education at the school. I am married to Laura Wurtz Foyle, a clinical psychologist with a practice in Glastonbury. We have a son in the 4th grade and a daughter in the 2nd grade at Naubuc Elementary School. I have volunteered extensively with youth athletics in coaching Glastonbury soccer, basketball, and baseball teams. Currently, I am an Associate Professor of Government at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. I was recently profiled in the Glastonbury Citizen after receiving Wesleyan’s Binswanger Prize for Excellence in Teaching. I received my B.A. with distinction and honors at Stanford University and completed M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science at Duke University. We’re facing several critical issues in Glastonbury education. First, we must preserve small class sizes, the building block of any education program, even in trying economic times. Second, we must have educational leaders who are able to preserve educational excellence while remaining fiscally responsible. Finally, I fear that radical cuts to the education budget will undermine Glastonbury’s competitive advantage in central Connecticut and erode our property values
