On March 27, 2014, the Glastonbury Democratic Town Committee elected a new Executive Board for 2014-16 at their regular meeting at the Glastonbury Riverfront Community Center. Robert (Bob) Zanlungo, GDTC Chair from 2012-2014, enthusiastically passed the gavel to Charlie Murray. Zanlungo stated, “It has been an honor to serve the Town of Glastonbury as the Chair of the Glastonbury Democrats. I am delighted that a community leader like Charlie Murray was elected to assume the role of Chairman for the next two years. He was elected unanimously by our membership and he has my full support in his next endeavor.”
Other newly elected members of the GDTC Executive Board are Julie Thompson, Vice Chairman, replacing outgoing Charlie Murray; Allen Friedrich, replacing outgoing Treasurer, Winnie Zimberlin; Robyn Guimont, replacing outgoing Secretary, Denise Weeks.
New Chair Murray has lived in Glastonbury for over 31 years and is active in multiple causes throughout Connecticut. Murray is retired from Travelers Insurance and a past President of the Greater Hartford Jaycees. Currently, Murray serves as volunteer Vice President, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) North Central CT/Western MA Chapter; Board of Trustees Secretary for Subvets (Submarine Veterans) Groton; and Chair Subvets Children’s Christmas Party. Additionally, he volunteers at the House of Bread and Peter’s Retreat in Hartford; serves as a Docent for the (SFML) Submarine Museum in Groton; as an Honor Guard for Subvets and IAH, and is a member of the Town Public Building Commission.
New Vice Chair, Julie Thompson has lived in Glastonbury for 15 years. She is an active PTO and PTSO volunteer, acts as a docent at the Welles Shipman Ward house, Girl Scout leader and serves on the Council for St. Mark Lutheran Church. Thompson served as president of Nayaug PTO executive board and president of the Woodledge Pool Club. Julie is an attorney admitted in Connecticut and North Carolina. She has taken time off from her career to raise her four children, who attend Glastonbury schools.
New Treasurer, Allen Friedrich is employed in the Finance Department of the US Postal Service. He is a lifetime community volunteer in several organizations, including the YMCA, Y’s Men’s Service Club, Rotary, Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Volunteers of America. He was recognized as the “Volunteer of the Year” in California in 1989. Allen Friedrich came to Glastonbury, CT in 2001. He serves on the Fair Rent Commission and the Personnel Appeals Board.
New Secretary, Robyn Guimont is employed by Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group. She grew up in Glastonbury and has been an active member of the community throughout her life. Some of her many activities have included Girl Scout Leader; Children’s Special Program Coordinator, Welles-Turner Library; President of Glastonbury Safe Rides; and membership and/or Chair of several boards of the South Glastonbury Congregational Church. She serves on the Building Board of Appeals/Code Review Committee.
In his closing comments before the membership, Zanlungo thanked Denise Weeks, Winnie Zimberlin and Charlie Murray for their extraordinary service to the Glastonbury Democrats and to the community.
Murray thanked the members of the GDTC for giving him the opportunity to serve them and especially those members who encouraged him over the last 3 years: Pat Low, Zelda Lessne, Bob Dibella and Amrutur (Sheenu) Srinivasan.
